Best 10 Dive Knife in 2020

Klapp Tauchermesser

The diving knife or dive knife is an important tool and emergency equipment for a diver.

For a diver there is a giant big enemy (no not sharks) it is man made! The fishing net, mostly hangs cut and abandoned on the reef in the corals, kills marine life long after it has landed there! Fish and corals suffocate from it. Therefore it is important to remove these nets.

Here you can watch a video of a huge abandoned fishing net that we recently removed.
You can find more about this on our marine conservation website

Sometimes a diver does not see the almost invisible fishing line or the fishing net and can become entangled in it. But if the buddy is far away or does not take care of his buddy, this incident can quickly become an emergency and therefore it is important to have a knife with you to free yourself from the net or the fishing line.

You can also use the knife as a signaling tool by tapping the tank with the blade.

Some knifes also have a knob at the end of the handle, which is made of metal, which of course can be hammered against the tank for acoustic signaling in order to get attention. However, a diving knife is not a substitute for safety-relevant signal means, in particular surface signal means.

What is important and what to consider before buying a diving knife

Handle construction

SCUBAPRO Maco Tauchermesser

The construction of the diving knife handle should be shaped and largely non-slip. Slip-proof is usually guaranteed with a wishbone before the blade.

Material handle

The material of a dive knife handle can be made of very different materials. Some examples are stainless steel, titanium, plastic. The shape and size of the dive knife handle must also be easy to handle with gloves.

Material Blade

The material of the blade can also be made of different materials, steel, brass, ceramic, titanium or even stainless steel.

Steel

it is the cheapest option, but it also rusts very quickly and is not as durable as the other versions.

Stainless steel

is less prone to corrosion but also softer than steel

Titanium

is lighter than stainless steel and just as unbreakable. At the same time, titanium is characterized by a high level of corrosion resistance in salt water. (For me the best solution).

Ceramic

Knives are comparatively expensive and ceramics are brittle and easily broken.

Corrosion

Even with “rustproof” blades, it should be noted that the majority of stainless steels in seawater are definitely at risk of corrosion.

Blade grind

Cressi Orca Tauchermesser

The blade should have a strongly sharpened, smooth edge on one side and a serrated edge on the other to make it easier to cut through fibrous material.

Often, good dive knifes also have a special sack-like cutout for cutting rope and fishing lines called a Line cutter.

As you can see on the Picture to the left on this blade.

Intended use

The dive knife is just a tool, contrary to popular belief, sea creatures cannot be repelled effectively with a dive knife. There is never a need for it either!

Locking of the dive knife in the sheath

SCUBAPRO Maco Tauchermesser

The locking of the dive knife in the sheath should be intuitive and simple, preferably audible with a click, so that you can be sure it’s locked securly without looking at the dive knife, so you do not lose the dive knife if it is not properly engaged. There are also sheath of fabric with a flap that are covered with Velcro to prevent them from falling out.

Attachment

POSEIDON - SQRMesser Apollo Titan

The attachment of the dive knife is particularly effective at two points, but it also depends on the size of the knife.

One possibility of attachment is on the leg with two rubber bands that hold the sheath. Or on the BCD where you sometimes have prefabricated holes to attach the knife or you can also attach it to the Inflator hose or corrugated tube with cable ties. But it shouldn’t be too big.

Safety string

In addition, the dive knife should have a safety string so that it does not sink irretrievably into the depths or into the bottom sediment if it falls out of hand.

You can also attach it to a lanyard, which increases the range.

Size of a dive knife

This is also everyone’s taste. The knifes are available in all sizes from “toothpicks” to “dive knife machete”.

Jackknife

Klapp Tauchermesser
Folding Dive Knife

Folding dive knifes are knifes that can be folded up and can therefore be stowed in a BCD pocket without a sheath. You have to note that these are very difficult to unfold with gloves and usually need both hands to do so due to a locking system of the blade.

Blunt or pointed end of the blade

The blunt end can usually be used as a flathead screwdriver or as a lever to open something.

The tip of the blade can be used for impaling or drilling holes. So it depends on what you mostly need the dive knife for or what kind of blade end you prefer.

Line cutter

Line Cutter

Rope or Line cutters can either be purchased as a single product as shown in the picture on the left.

Or are often integrated into the blade of a dive knife. This can be recognized by a special sack-like cutout at the top of the blade.

Scissors

The alternative to the dive knife is scissors.

Edelstahl Schere

Since we often have to do with abandoned fishing nets that are entangled in the corals, we use scissors instead of dive knifes as they are much gentler on the corals.

Since many corals grow like antlers called branching corals, it is quite difficult to get between the coral branches with a knife. If you try anyway and want to cut the net, you have to pull on it, which in turn can damage the coral even more. With a pair of scissors, you gently cut out the net and get into the smaller corners of a coral.

There are also dive knifes that have both scissors and a knife combined.

However, it should also be said that scissors are not as robust and durable as a dive knife.

Care and cleaning

After diving in salt water, fresh water or in a swimming pool, you should always rinse the dive knife with fresh water and then let it dry outside the sheath. You should also press the buttons on the lock while washing so that the remaining salt water or dirt is rinsed out.

Insider tip

After a dive is before a dive and a good insider tip is always to smear the blade with silicone grease as it protects the blade from rusting a little better! If there are rust spots, depending on the material of the blade, you can work them on with a fine sandpaper and then smear them again with silicone grease.

Top 10 Neoprene Booties

Cressi Lux Dry Boots Bottilons de Plongée 5mm

Neoprene booties also often called neoprene shoes. Are shoes that you can wear for diving or on the beach and for all water sports.

Neoprene booties should have some important product properties.

Toygogo Neoprene booties 5mm

Areas of use

Since these not only be worn for scuba diving, but also in all other common water sports such as kayaking, canoeing, fishing, kite surfing, wind surfing, surfing, sailing, triathlon, snorkeling, canyoning.

Main features

The neoprene booties have two main characteristics that they should meet. They should keep the foot warm and protect against injury.

Neopren

The shoes are made of neoprene and, like the men’s and women’s neoprene suits, are available in different neoprene thicknesses. Mostly between 3-7mm.

Neoprene booties are made of neoprene. In technical fields, neoprene is known as chloroprene rubber or polychloroprene. At the molecular level, the material consists mainly of chlorine and hydrogen atoms. Production begins with a chemical reaction between chloroprene and other solutions.

The result of this reaction is flakes. These flakes can be further processed. In order to transform the solid synthetic rubber flakes into elastic rubber, it needs vulcanization. After the vulcanization the molecules can no longer move, the end result is elastic and will always spring back to its original shape.

In order to be able to sell neoprene as a fabric, the right and left side of a neoprene sheet are covered with fabrics, these can also be printed with colors or patterns.

Difference between men and women neoprene booties

In many parts of the diving equipment there is no difference between men and women, and the same applies to neoprene booties, most of which are unisex shoes.

Sole of Neoprene Booties

Yonsub Neopren Füßling 5mm

The sole should have a semi-rigid or even a solid outsole and a non-slip coating. If you have to step on sharp stones when entering the water so that they cannot penetrate the shoe through the neoprene and injure you or you can slip on the stones. In order to offer you enough protection for your feet even when walking over demanding terrain, the sole should have a proper profile.

High and mid-high shoes

Cressi Füßling-Badeschuhe MINORCA Short Dive Boot
Cressi half high neoprene booties

Neoprene Booties are available as high ones that go above the ankle and as half-high ones that only go below the ankle.

The high Neoprene Booties are always recommended so that the ankle is also protected from injuries.

Zipper

Reißverschluss
Zipper

Most booties come with a side zip to make it easier to get in and out. Especially when the shoes are wet and high or thick neoprene, it is not easy to get in or out of.

The coarse and rustproof mostly plastic zipper is underlaid with a smooth neoprene strip which reduces the water circulation to a minimum and does not cause irritation through the bare zipper.

Without Zipper

There are also models without a zipper. These are mostly half-height or very thin neoprene socks that are not too difficult to put on and take off because the elasticity is greater with smaller neoprene thicknesses. Be careful with thick 5 or even 7mm shoes without zippers – these are usually very difficult to put on and take off.

Toe cap

Zehenkappe Füssling

Many neoprene socks have an additional PU insert on the instep, also known as a toe cap, to prevent the toe(nails) from rubbing against the neoprene and chafing when doing finkicking or walking.

This insert or attachment makes the neoprene booties much more durable and also more stable.

Fin strap fixation

Flossenkamm

Many of the better neoprene booties have a rigid rubber notch (swelling) above the verse, also called a fin comb, to hold the fin strap and prevent it from slipping off when finkicking.

Fin straps often have a cutout or notch where this fin crest fits in.

Wet and semi-dry Version

There are wet and semi-dry versions of Neoprene booties the same as with neoprene wetsuits, because the neoprene booties are often used in cold water. There is a double smooth neoprene sealing strip on the top end of the semi dry neoprene booties which can be overlapped with the smooth neoprene sealing strip attached to the legs of the semi-dry neoprene suit, thus keeping the water circulation to a minimum keeping the foot warm.

Neoprene socks

But sometimes even the thick 7mm semi-dry neoprene booties are not enough in cold waters, so the so-called neoprene socks are used which, as the word suggests, are worn as socks inside the neoprene booties.

Neopren Socken
Neopren Socken

Neoprene socks are made of very elastic and durable 1.5mm-3mm thick neoprene and are provided with robust and tear-resistant seams. The neoprene socks are coated on the inside for easy on and off and for friction-free comfort.

In the case of socks, it is important to ensure that they have an extremely high shaft in order to be able to achieve a wide overlap of the leg cuffs of the neoprene suit.

What thickness of neoprene booties should I wear?

The water temperature is crucial here. The water temperature can be very low, especially with divers and surfers. At below 10°C, a material thickness of at least 7mm is recommended. In tropical waters, however, 3mm is completely sufficient.

Care and cleaning

After a dive in salt water, fresh water or swimming pool, you should always rinse the neoprene socks with fresh water and then dry them. However, depending on the climate, getting these dry inside is not easy in some areas of the world, so electric shoe dryers can be used.

The zips of the neoprene booties should be creamed with candle wax every now and then, as this extends the lifespan and makes it easier to close and open.

Theoretically, you can also clean neoprene booties in a washing machine, but you must ensure that you select a gentle program, such as a wool program. The temperature should not be higher than 30°C.

Neoprene should never be spun or dried in a tumble dryer.

Best Top 10 Women neoprene wetsuit 2020

Cressi Altum Wetsuit Lady 3mm

What to consider when buying a women neoprene wetsuits. Wet suit, semi dry suit, dry suit and shorties

What is a women neoprene wetsuit?

Scubapro Definition women neoprene wetsuit 5mm Men
Scubapro Definition Overall 5mm

A neoprene wetsuit is made of neoprene. In technical fields, neoprene is known as chloroprene rubber or polychloroprene. At the molecular level, the material consists mainly of chlorine and hydrogen atoms. Production begins with a chemical reaction between chloroprene and other solutions.

Difference between men and women neoprene wetsuit

In many Scuba Diving Equipment Parts there is no difference between Men and Women however there is a big one in Neoprene Wetsuit cuts. Women feel usually much faster cold than men so it’s a better Idea to buy a thicker wetsuit if you are a frosty.

Women cut

The cut of a women neoprene wetsuit differs from that of men. Women’s wetsuits are cut tighter at the shoulders and narrower at the waist and fuller at the hips. The chest area is also further shaped in the style of women neoprene wetsuit.

Color and Style

For many women, the color and style of a women neoprene wetsuit also plays a major role.

Sensation of cold

“It’s not a myth that women feel the cold faster than men. And this even though the heat transport works basically the same for men and women, namely via the blood. If the outside temperature drops, the blood vessels in the arms and legs constrict in order to better supply the core of the body with its vital organs with blood and thereby protect it. However, the temperature range at which this phenomenon takes effect is different: in women it is already from around 15 degrees Celsius, in men at lower temperatures.

The higher muscle percentage in men is also essential for the different perception of cold by men and women, because muscles produce heat that is distributed throughout the body. In men, it makes up about 40 percent of the body, in women, however, only about 25 percent. Men therefore carry around a small stove, so to speak, that warms them internally.

The different skin thicknesses in men and women also make women shiver more quickly, because thick skin prevents additional heat radiation in men. Women are literally thinner and give off more heat.

Insulation ability of neoprene wetsuit

First of all, you have to know that water dissipates body heat 25 times faster than air, so you cannot survive forever even in water at 25° C and the colder the water, the faster you lose your body heat.

Neoprene has excellent insulation properties that is due to the fact that a lot of air is trapped in the neoprene, which, as we know, has very good insulation.

Thickness of a women neoprene wetsuit

The thicker the neoprene fabric, the better the insulation from the cold water.

Mostly for very cold water with 12° C and colder or for ice diving and long dives in them, you’d use a dry suit.

Women Neoprene wetsuits from approx. 7mm thickness can be used for cold water diving (12° C and colder), but dry suits are recommended. This also includes neoprene gloves, hoods and shoes (booties).

Long women neoprene wetsuits in 3-5mm thickness are usually used for waters with a water temperature of more than 18° C.

Shorties are women neoprene wetsuits with short arms and half-length legs, these are mostly 3mm thick and they are used for water temperatures from 25° C upwards.

Buoyancy and thickness of women neoprene wetsuits

Weight and thickness of Wetsuit
Weight and thickness of Wetsuit

The neoprene thickness of the suit affects the buoyancy control, as thicker material creates more static buoyancy. This buoyancy has to be compensated with lead weights. To make matters worse, the neoprene itself is compressed by the water pressure increasing with depth, so that the buoyancy decreases with increasing ambient pressure – i.e. increasing water depth. Since the weight of the lead remains constant, the downforce increases with increasing depth, which has to be compensated for by a buoyancy compensator (BCD).

How does a women neoprene wetsuit work?

Many believe that you don’t get wet in a neoprene wetsuit. This is only true in a dry suit.

Wetsuit function
Function of a women neoprene wetsuit
and a semidry wetsuit

In all other diving suits you get wet. The water that has entered the wetsuit remains in the suit for a while because the ends of a neoprene wetsuit are provided with cuffs and the thin layer of water is thus heated up by the body heat.

That is why it is so important to have a neoprene wetsuit that is skin-tight because the less water penetrates, the less the body has to heat the water entered up and the longer you stay warm. Depending on the suit and your movements, this water layer is exchanged faster or slower (water circulation).

Types of women neoprene wetsuits

Shorty

Cressi Shorty

Is the simplest version of the women neoprene wetsuit. As the word shorty suggests, they have short arms and legs and are only effective in protecting the core temperature of the body.

This can be worn in tropical areas with water temperatures of 25° C and more. Mostly in the common thicknesses of 1.5-3mm available and also obviously the cheapest version of all of them.

Women Neoprene Wetsuit

Is a Neoprene wetsuit with long arms and legs where cuffs are sewn on so that the water stays in the suit longer and is not exchanged as quickly. Usually comes in thicknesses between 3-7mm

Semi-Dry women Neopren Wetsuit

These suits don’t just get you “half-wet”. These neoprene wetsuits have smooth neoprene sealing lips on the arms, legs and neck. With the higher quality semi-dry neoprene wetsuits, the zipper is also underlaid with a cuff or sealing lip. Which causes the water to run into the suit but stays in wetsuite much longer Water Circulation is relatively slowl depending on e.g. Movement while scuba diving or getting in and out of the water. This makes the suit very comfortable for colder waters for long or several dives per day. Most semi-dry wetsuits come in thicknesses between 5-7mm.

Dry Suit

Drysuit function
Function of a dry suit

There are several types of drysuits and the topic is very large as buoyancy control is not only done with the BCD but also has to be done with the suit itself. I’m not going to go into this type of suit too much, though.

Even if you have successfully completed a diving course and buy a dry suit, you should try it out in the swimming pool or in shallow water or even better take a course. Most international diving organizations offer dry suit diving courses. Because there are certain things with this suit that you have to pay attention to and practice in order not to be in danger underwater!

Some will still remember: When James Bond in “Goldfinger” takes off his wetsuit (dry suit) and wears a tuxedo underneath that is completely dry and yes it would work.

Dry suits are designed for diving in very cold water, for commercial underwater work, and for sewage diving.

Scubapro Trockentauchanzug
Scubapro Dry suit

The dry suit, is a one-piece suit made of water- and gas-tight material. Today these are made from trilaminate membranes of synthetic plastics or neoprene.

The advantage of the dry suit is that the diver hardly ever comes into contact with water and, when properly filled with an insulating gas, like air it is better protected from the cold than in any other diving suits. The dry suit is usually sealed with a cuff at the neck and wrist and the boots are permantly attached. It has a water and gas-tight zipper on the back or chest for getting in and out. In addition, textile protective clothing against the cold is worn under the suit.

Zippers

Reißverschluss
Zipper

The main zipper on a women neoprene wetsuit can be on the back as well as on the front, vertical, horizontal or diagonal. For the shorties and neoprene wetsuits, these are normal coarse zippers mostly made of plastic because they don’t rust. In the case of a dry suit, this must be zipper which is gas and waterproof so that no water penetrates. The semi-dry women neoprene wetsuits have both wet and dry zipper versions.

All zippers on the women neoprene wetsuits are underlaid with a smooth neoprene sealing lip as this is more comfortable and the pure zipper does not cause irritation of the skin.

Thicker long wet and semi dry neoprene wetsuits with zippers on the arms and legs make it easier to get into the suit.

Insider tip:

If the neoprene wetsuit has no zippers and it is very difficult for you to put the suit on, you can put a plastic bag over your hand or foot before getting into the suit. The neoprene slides much better then. The alternative is to mix a little dish washing liquid and water and spray it on the arm or leg.

Protection against injury and nettles

Jellyfish

Women Neoprene wetsuits are not only worn to protect against cooling down of the body temperature, but also to protect against injuries such as jellyfish and their nettles.

Or if you accidentally roam along a rock face. Shipwrecks are also a good example with their sharp edges

One piece or two piece

Zweiteiliger Neopren Tauchanzug
Two piece neoprene Wetsuit

A one-piece is a neoprene diving suit that consists of one part. Here different thicknesses of neoprene can be sewn together so that the one-piece is, for example, a 3mm thick wetsuit on the arms and legs and a 5mm thick neoprene wetsuit on the core of the body.

A two-piece is two separate pieces of clothing, a high-cut or bib shorts (called “Long John”) and a long-sleeved jacket, usually with an attached hood, so you have a thick double suit at the core of your body.

Some two-piece neoprene wetsuits only consist of pants and a vest, but they are also much less warm.

Ice vest

Eisweste Neopren

One-piece suits sometimes come with a separate ice vest to be able to dive with this suit in very cold waters.

This ice vest is worn over the normal suit.

But you can also buy them individually.

Top 10 Best BCD in 2020

Cressi Aquaride BCD

Here is my Top 10 Best BCD in 2020. The buoyancy control device (BCD), or jacket, is a system that allows a diver to control his or her neutral hovering while scuba diving.

Controlling your buoyancy underwater is an important skill to master and to achieve positive, neutral or negative buoyancy as a diver to not bump into any corals, fish, rocks, sharks or turtles, and disturb or even worse destroy them. A perfect buoyancy control is essential for a Diver!

There are a few different type of BCD’s on the Market which I will explain here further down but first there are some technical terms on a BCD which are important to know if you’d like to invest in a BCD you’ll know what the description of a BCD actually means.

Description BCD Top 10 Best BCD in 2020
Description BCD

Bladder

A scuba BCD is just an air bladder that lets you control your buoyancy underwater by inflating or deflating your BCD. The Bladder are airfilled pockets connected to each other which are surrounding you.

D-Ring

Besides controlling your buoyancy, scuba BCD’s also store your dive accessories, in Pockets with zippers or Velcro as well as D-Rings. Keep your regulators and octopuses organized and prevent them from dangling.

Buckle

Buckles are made mostly from plastic and keep your BCD where it supposed to be, or make it easier to take it off or put on.

Cummerbund

Cummerbund is a Velcro in front of your Belly it keeps the BCD on your back when diving and inflating the BCD so it doesn’t flow off.

BCD Detail Backplate Weight
BCD Detail Backplate Weight

Backplate

The BCD Backplate is mostly made of Plastic due to weight and holds your Tank securely with a strap if properly closed.

Weight integrated

Some later BCD’s are weight integrated which means they have specialized pockets for carrying the Lead weights with a fast release mechanism in case of an emergency.

BCD Detail Dump Valve Air2
BCD Detail Dump Valve Air2

Dump Valve

If in case you inflated the BCD with too much air you can pull the string of your Dump Valve and a valve placed on your shoulder will open and will let a lot of air out quickly. Mostly there is one on each shoulder where on the left shoulder its integrated in the inflator hose which you would pull to open it. On your right side it usually is a small button the size of a big marble to pull.

Some BCD’s also have a Dump Valve on the lower right bottom side in case you need to deflate while head over Diving.

These Dump Valves also act as over pressure valve in case the BCD is inflated to heavily.

Air 2

An Air2 is a fully equipped Regulator which is attached to the end of the Corrugated tube and acts as an inflator/deflator and an emergency regulator in case your main Regulator fails.

Male or Female BCD?

Most BCD’s are unisex, meaning they work for both men and women. However, there are a few Lady BCD’s available. Because a women’s cut is narrower at the shoulder and wider at the hips than a mans.

Construction Material

The basic material used in the construction of BCD’s is nylon, or a variation often called. Cordura®, this being the brand name of a company that specializes in tough fabrics made from, among other things, nylon. Some manufacturers may highlight their extra polyurethane (PU) coating, which aids resistance to abrasion.

Denier’ is a term which may be more familiar to readers. It is a measure of how densely the fibers of a particular fabric are woven, with the lower end of the scale being less dense – and therefore lighter, but less durable – than the higher end.

BCD types

Recreational Jacket Style BCD

Cressi Travellight

This is the most common BCD type for warm water recreational diving. It is also the type that you were probably given to use when you got your scuba diving license. Many Dive Center use them to teach due to reliability and robustness. Also because it’s easier to learn buoyancy control in these type of BCD’s than in a Wing for example.

The air bladder wraps around the diver from the back to the front.

Travel BCD

Travel BCD

A travel BCD is like a normal diving BCD except more lightweight and smaller to pack.

Nowadays with most airlines charging exponentially excess luggage or reducing their free carry on luggage you are left with leaving some Dive Equipment at home or renting it expensive from the Dive Center but we all know that you’d rather use your own equipment which you are familiar with and know it does fit like a glove.

So now more than ever it’s important to look for light weight BCD’s

Semi Wing BCD

Cressi Ace BCD

Advanced divers might prefer Semi wing BCD’s because it allows for more arm movement and you can remain horizontal underwater.

This is because the air bladder is placed on the back.

The weight is also lighter than a normal style Jacket BCD while it is still equipped with D-Rings, Weight Pockets, and Side Pockets.

Wing BCD

The design includes a Metal, Aluminum or Stainless Steel backplate, harness and detachable air bladder surrounding the backplate. This type of BCD originates from technical diving, where divers are using a twinset of two tanks or a rebreather. In recent years, wing-style BCD’s have appeared in single-tank diving and made its way into recreational diving.

xDepp Wing BCD
xDepp Wing BCD

Like a jacket Style BCD the shape is still like a sleeveless vest with pockets around the waist but the front is more streamlined because there is no air bladder in the front.

Due to a very small water resistance, low drag reduces the effort needed to move through the water. The less effort, the better our air consumption and the more time we get on our underwater adventure. However the Wing Style is more expensive and has less storage space if at some at all.

Stabilizing BCD

The Stabilizing Jacket remains the BCD style choice of experienced and professional divers because of its dynamic control system. Stabilizing Jackets reject the idea of air bladders within BCDs; instead, they use internal air passages that basically embrace the diver and allow air to remain dynamic inside the jacket. This air flows freely to the jacket’s highest point, which allows the diver to basically rotate around a bubble. This adds stability and creates ease of motion for the diver.

Apeks XL4+ Regulator

This is an equipment and buying guide for the Top 11 Best Scuba Diving Regulator 2020 and a +1 surprise!

Best Scuba Diving Regulator 2020

A scuba Diving regulator is a device that lets you breath underwater. It is connected to a high pressurized air tank which you carry on your back and it does downgrade the high pressure comes out of the tank into a breathable intermediate pressure.

I will spare you all the boring technical Details and explanations but there are a few things you’ll need to know before buying a Regulator.

There are 2 main different Regulators on the market

The Membrane and the Piston Regulators.

So whats the difference?

Piston Regulator

Balanced-Piston
Balanced-Piston

Piston Regulator are the simple and cheaper Regulators and as long as you only dive in warm Water above 12°C Water temperature these ones are fine. You are able to dive in cold water with a Piston Regulator but it is not recommended.
The general advantage of a piston-based first stage lies in its reliability and reduced maintenance requirements, due to an effective but simpler mechanism with less moving parts. More importantly, no other design can reach the high air delivery rate of a balanced piston controlled first stage.

Membrane Regulator

Unbalanced-Diaphragm
Unbalanced-Diaphragm

The Membrane Regulators can be used in warm water but are also for cold water diving even ice diving is possible with these regulators but there are considerably more expensive than Piston Regulators.
Diaphragm-based first stages are environmentally sealed so that water cannot enter the inner mechanism. Bearing in mind that regulators generate temperatures up to minus -30 °C due to the fast moving air and the high pressures involved, it is imperative that sensitive moving metal parts avoid contact with cold water.
Therefore, diaphragm first stages have been the favored choice of cold-water divers.
But it also has higher maintenance cost due to more moving parts inside the regulator.

Many people claim the Membrane Regulators can’t freeze but that’s not true they can but do not freeze as quickly as a piston regulator.

Regulators are on the market since 1942 but didn’t change that much.

What is the difference between INT and DIN?

DIN and INT is the attachment of the first stage to the Tank valve. The Valve is either a DIN or an INT mount so is the Regulator.

Which is the better connection?

Clearly the DIN version because the O-ring is larger and is screwed into the inside of the valve, making it much less susceptible. Unfortunately, the DIN version is also the less common version.

Adapter

There are always Adapter available to make sure your regulator fits on the tank no matter what mount.

Tank-Adapter

Octopus or Alternate Air Sourse (AAS)

Scubapro Octopus
Scubapro Octopus

The Octopus or Alternate Air source is a second 2nd stage on your regulator in case the main Regulator fails or your buddy runs out of air you can easily supply air to your buddy with the AAS and not using your main Regulator.
It is recommended to have the same brand as your first stage.

The Octopus is mostly yellow to be able to be seen easily in an emergency.

Gauges

Scubapro Gauge

There is at least one gauge which is a necessary must! It is the Tank pressure Gauge or submersible pressure gauge (SPG). Some are filled with oil. You can combine them in a console with other gauges like a compass or a dive computer or install them as a single part.

Pressure gauges are different in Imperial showing PSI and Metric showing tank pressure in bar some are showing dual Scala.

Ocean surface clean-up. It took us over 2h to clean up everything. Not all of the plastic sinks it’ll float on the surface and is often pushed together in big patches by current and waves. Often Marinelife will try to eat it as they don’t know what it is and can’t try with their hands can they? Once eaten it can not be digested and will often remain in the guts. Marine Life often will starve to death due to their stomach is filled up with indigestible plastic as well as microplastic which will go into their organs and humans will eat fish again, it’s a circle isn’t it? In every fish we find dead we bring back and dissect it we always find some kind of plastics in its stomach. Scientist already found microplastic in human organs. Not only anymore in our stomach as it was discovered in the early year of 2008. We need to cut back on single plastic use. Today is shark awareness day! Humans kill 100 Mil. Sharks per year, mostly for their fins. That’s per second around 3.6 sharks killed and 0,94 born. We take them out more than 3 times faster than they can reproduce. We need the sharks it’s a reef cleaner, it eats old and sick fish. 9 people get attacked by a shark per year 8 of them survive! It is increasing though, a reason for that is that 90% of Fish stock in the open Oceans is declined, sharks don’t find enough food anymore! But that’s just my personal opinion. Nevertheless, More people get killed by a falling coconut or a soda pop machine than by a shark. Many more people get killed by starvation 8 Mio. to be exact no one cares! Or in traffic accidents 3500 people killed per day! Just amazing what TV and Medias do to us! Our new Marine Life Conservation Project is to protect our Sharks. Peacock mantis shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllaru). The mantis shrimp has one of the most elaborate visual systems ever discovered. Compared to the three types of colour-receptive cones that humans possess in their eyes, the eyes of a mantis shrimp carry 16 types of colour receptive cones. Furthermore, some of these shrimp can tune the sensitivity of their long-wavelength vision to adapt to their environment. The midband region of its eye is made up of six rows of specialised ommatidia—a cluster of photoreceptor cells 12 for colour sensitivity, 4 for colour filtering. The vision of the mantis shrimp can perceive both polarised light and multispectral images. Their eyes mounted on mobile stalks and capable of moving independently of each other are similarly variably coloured and are considered to be the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom. Amazing isn’t it? Today is #WorldOceanDay Apart from depleating our oceans by overfishing humans kill 100 Mil. Sharks per year, mostly for their fins. That’s around 3.6 sharks per second killed and only 0,94 born are born. We humans kill sharks more than 3 times faster than they can reproduce. We need the shark it’s a reef cleaner, it eats old and sick fish. If you would like to know more about sharks and our marine protection projects please visit https://ift.tt/3h62Ujy This is a zebra shark (Stegostoma fasciatum) it is an Endangered species! Often mixed up with the Leopard Shark due to its Pattern. It’s called Zebra shark because as a juvenile it does have the black and white stripes of a zebra. This Zebra #Shark is 2,5m in length and is nocturnal laying on sandy patches and the seafloor during daytime. That u see one swimming during daytime is pure luck! The zebra shark is oviparous which means the female lays eggs. Pteraeolidia ianthina, is a remarkable aeolid nudibranch which are way ahead of man in harnessing solar energy. Pteraeolidia has evolved a method of capturing and farming microscopic plants (zooxanthellae) in its own body. The plants flourish in this protected environment and as they convert the sun’s energy into sugars, they pass a significant proportion on to the nudibranch for its own use. . .
