Top 10 Best Scuba Diving Torches 2020

ORCATORCH D520

In this guide I will explain and guide you through to buying the best Scuba Diving Torch for your needs.

Scuba Diving Torches or also called Flashlights, are waterproof built torches who can illuminate the underwater world.

 Scuba Diving Torch

Why would you need a Torch?

As you go deeper Water becomes darker due to less sunlight reaching the lower depth as light gets reflected by particles. So for a diver it’s a good Idea to own a proper underwater torch.

Not only for deep diving but also for small crevices and caves where usually a lot of Marine Life is hiding. Also if you like Night dives its great to have your own scuba diving torch. You know how it works and how bright it is.

What is Lumen

The lumen (Latin for light, lamp) is the SI unit of luminous flux. So it indicates how much light a lamp emits per unit of time.

Lumens-vs-Lux
Lumens-vs-Lux

To determine the lumen you will need in a Scuba Diving torch is kind of easy; the more the better. However the lumen information on a description of a flashlight is important, but manufacturers often use them as a marketing tool and exaggerate this number.
So sometimes it is better to rather look for built quality and materials used and researching other pages to determine different lumen information of the torch you are looking to buy.

Depending if you need a torch for illuminating a video which needs a wider flood angle or just for illuminating crevices, holes and caves which will need a a smaller angle of beam light. Average beam angle range between 12 to 75 degrees.

What is Lux? Beam range

The lumen should not be confused with the lux. Lux is the unit of illuminance that indicates how much light per unit of time per unit of area.

As far as the torch distance range is concerned, the LUX number is a decisive value. This determines the luminosity for a specified distance.

If the Torch has a low LUX value and at the same time has a high number of lumen, this means that the torch emits light more broadly, i. H. has a strong scattering effect (flooder torch). These kind of scuba diving torches are particularly suitable for Video lightning.

If the torch has a high LUX value with a high number of lumen at the same time, then one speaks of so-called thrower torches. These are characterized by the fact that they bundle the light beam very strongly and thus achieve a high distance beam range. They are particularly suitable for recognizing details over long distances and are better for scuba diving if you want to illuminate the small spaces, crevices and caves.

LED Types

single LED

What type of LED is used in torches?
Virtually all scuba diving torches made today use an XM-L LED. This LED produces a full-flood beam, with less throw than the XP-G. Total lumen output for the original XM-L peaked at near 700. Differences in the T6 and U2 flux bins include higher brightness. All LED scuba diving torches with a light output of over 2000 lumen fall into the category of comparing it with daylight.

The light beam is always generated with several high-performance LEDs such as CREE XP-L V6, CREE XM-L2 or CREE XHP70.

Power

An average 100 lumen torch is able to provide around 5 -10 hours runtime using 2x AA battery. This amount of lumen is technically enough for urban and suburban use but probably not for scuba diving. In Scuba Diving you’ll need at least 700+ Lumen to get anything out of your purchase.

Working Time

working time

You should have a look at the actual working time of a scuba diving torch. The maximum working time is always given for the lowest set light intensity.

At maximum power, the working time is multiple times shorter.

This also depends on the Type of Battery the maximum charge capacity of the battery as well as the number of LEDs and the LED type.

Do LED torches get hot? 🔥

The scuba diving torches produce heat when on, and the heat comes from the associated core of the LED bulb. The greater the power consumption of the LED light and or the more LED’s, the more heat appears. Most of them have an overheating switch built in but underwater due to the good heat dissipation of water the torches usually never overheat. Depending on the power of your LED’s this might be a different story if you turn them on and use it as a normal torch on land.

Material and fabrication

Look for Marine grade Aluminum in scuba diving torches, it not only last longer than plastic but it also dissipates the heat much better which also extends the life of the LED bulb as it doesn’t become to hot.

Torch 7 LED 5600 Lumen

A robust and shock-proof material prevents defects if the lamp falls. In addition, particularly robust flashlights are ideal for tactical purposes in self-defense.

It’s better to have a torch with a front Glass rather than Plastic. Plastic can scratch easily which then quickly affects the luminosity of your Scuba Diving Torch

Size and usability

In Scuba Diving it’s always important not to have to big appliances. However a torch with good Batteries and a few good LED’s should fit in your BCD Pocket to store it away if not needed and not dangling around. The flashlight should be easy and intuitive to use.

The buttons and controls should also not be too small and still be operable with gloves.

Batteries and rechargeable batteries

Battery and Charger

Under no circumstances should batteries with too low or too high voltage or amperage be used, otherwise the LED’s could be damaged and also not being able to use up their maximum illumination capacity.

Many different Batteries are used in scuba diving torches. Make sure you not only have the correct Battery but also the correct charger for your rechargeable Batteries.

Rechargeable Batteries are the “better” Batteries for the environment due to less toxic rubbish.

Functions

Torch button

Nowadays, many scuba diving torches no longer have just one mode: on or off, but offer multiple settings for dimming of different brightness, have an SOS mode and/or a strobe mode (flash function) and possibly even changeable colors.
For example most fish can’t see the color spectrum red. If you do like night dives you can have scuba diving torches with UV-LED’s which brings out the bio-luminescence in Corals and Fish.

What is IPX

The IPX value (International Protection) indicates the water resistance of a torch. The classification goes from IPX0 to IPX9:

  • IPX0 – no protection
  • IPX1 – protection against vertically falling dripping water
  • IPX2 – protection against dripping water falling at an angle (15 ° from the vertical)
  • IPX3 – protection against falling spray water up to 60 ° from the vertical
  • IPX4 – protection against splash water from all directions
  • IPX5 – protection against water jets from all directions
  • IPX6 – protection against strong water jets
  • IPX7 – protection against temporary immersion in water
  • IPX8 – protection against permanent submersion (waterproof)
  • IPX9 – protection against ingress of water under pressure (water pressure tight)

Often scuba Diving torches are rated to around 60-100m in the description depth without stating the IPX rating.

Despite great care in our research, we cannot accept any liability for the information. Technical specifications are specifications by manufacturer.

Typically, after courtship, the male fertilises the eggs and then collects them in his mouth, holding onto them until they hatch. During this time he cannot feed. Small and hard to photograph but I was lucky enough to get a portrait shot of a Chrysiptera parasema, also known as yellowtail damselfish. In the wild, male C. parasema have their own territories, located near a nesting site. Each territory contains eggs from previous females. The females will swim around inspecting each male and its territory before choosing one based on its size and the number of eggs in its territory. As a part of the evaluation, the female will display a light ring around her eyes, and the male will respond with its own displays. The next day, the female will spawn with the chosen male. An individual male can have up to 10,000 eggs from different females. Males often abandon their territories to claim territories with more eggs, as this makes them appear more favorable to the females. The eggs hatch after up to 4 days, depending on temperature, and the male is responsible for guarding and caring for the eggs. The subsequent larval stage can take 10 to 50 days. This Hypselodoris pulchella #nudibranch was a bit Special it had a split tail as you can see on the picture. Not sure if this is a genetic mutation or if it was an attack from a predator. If you have any idea let me know what you think. Nevertheless the nudi seemed to be fine. Today is international whaleshark day. Let us appreciate and protect this magnificent shark. 10 facts about whaleshark 10. With the exception of the Mediterranean Sea, whale sharks can be found in all temperate and tropical oceans around the world and migrate thousands of miles to different feeding grounds. 9. The whale shark has distinctive light-yellow/white markings (random stripes and dots) on its very thick, dark gray skin. 8. Despite their size, whales sharks are considered harmless and are often referred to as “gentle giants.” 7. It is thought that whale sharks may have a lifespan of 100 to 150 years. 6. The whale shark is a filter feeder and can neither bite nor chew. Although its mouth can stretch to four feet wide, its thousands of teeth are so tiny that it can only eat small shrimp, fish and plankton by using its modified gill rakers as a suction filter. 5. A whale shark can process more than 6,000 liters of water an hour through its gills. 4. A whale shark’s mouth is at the very front of its head—as opposed to the underside of the head like most sharks. 3. It is thought that less than 10 percent of whale sharks born survive to adulthood. Upon giving birth, the mother shark leaves her young to fend for themselves. 2. Whale sharks are slow swimmers, moving at speeds of no little more than 3 miles per hour. 1. The main threat to whale sharks is the growth of unregulated and unsustainable fisheries to supply international trade demands for shark fins, liver oil (used to waterproof wooden boats), skin and meat. Brilliant flatworm (Pseudobiceros fulgor). Did you know? Pseudobiceros are hermaphrodites. Flatworms engage in penis fencing. 😂 When the “winner” touches its penis to the “skin” of the other, insemination occurs, and the “loser” has to bear the burden of motherhood. Zebra Shark

Zebra Shark (Stegostoma fasciatum)

Zebra Shark (Stegostoma fasciatum) is an Endangered species worldwide! Often mixed up with the Leopard Shark due to its Pattern. It’s called Zebra shark because as a juvenile it does have the black and white stripes of a zebra. This Zebra #Shark is 2,5m in length and is nocturnal laying on sandy patches and the seafloor during daytime. Unlike a Media lie that “all sharks have to swim” here is proof that many Sharks don’t have to. The zebra shark is oviparous which means the female lays eggs. Removing an illegal Fishing Cage inside the Marine National Park

On a scuba dive at the Marine national Park Phi Phi Islands on  20th August 2015 we have found an illegal set Fishing Cage. A Lot of fish have been trapped inside and it was attached with a big rope to a Coral, either by scuba or surface supply divers! Fish cages are not allowed 3 nautical miles around the MN-Park Borders! Thanks a lot to Stefan Heinsen for the great Camera work and Anett for helping out! Also a big thank you goes to project abroad research divers!

We are loosing Nemo

Nemo
Nemo

Because we humans burn fossils so fast the CO2 level in the Oceans rise Anemones become acid and Nemo has problems to locate predators.
According to numerous studies, if ocean acidification continues at the current rate, clownfish could experience significant sensory impairment. Since clownfish rely on their auditory and olfactory capabilities to evade predators and locate appropriate habitats, there is much indication that ocean acidification will negatively affect their population numbers. Signs appearing here! 6 years ago we had many more anemones and Nemos here!
PLEASE reduce your carbon footprint!

Yellow Lipped Sea Krait

A Yellow lipped Seasnake is going up to the surface to get a couple of Breath and then comes back down because they don’t have gills! Yellow-lipped sea krait can go as deep as 100 meters underwater and stay there for up to one hour. Every 10–14 days yellow-lipped sea kraits come on land to digest their food, drink fresh water, to shed their skin or mate and lay their eggs. They lay around 5-13 eggs at a time.
